When developers construct houses, basements are typically pre-waterproofed. However, if you are building your own house with a basement and have concerns about the contractor’s waterproofing methods, it’s important to understand the key techniques yourself.
For self-built basement waterproofing, the most critical element is the concrete structure. A well-built structure offers self-waterproofing properties and can last as long as the building itself. Therefore, when purchasing commercial concrete, opt for ready-made mixes with high waterproof and anti-seepage ratings, or consider adding waterproofing materials directly into the concrete. This approach is fundamental to effective basement waterproofing.
Additional waterproofing measures include applying a pre-applied anti-adhesion membrane on the cushion layer for optimal results, and using 1-2 layers of waterproofing on the basement side walls, such as a combination of coatings and membranes, to enhance protection. It is also essential to waterproof the back of the basement; using a penetrating crystalline waterproof coating is highly recommended to prevent capillary seepage effectively.
